One of my absolute favorite parts of being lucky e One of my absolute favorite parts of being lucky enough to own and operate this little shop is getting to meet and chat with (okay - and sometimes eavesdrop on 😬) groups of young people up for the weekend, starting their summer work as rafting/kayaking guides and camp counselors, or simply passing through. These guys started out reminiscing about high school book studies, moved on to a history discussion, had a brief philosophical exchange, laughed over some epic Risk game of the past, and asked about an obscure book on the origins of mining printed only in Latin. They purchased a few books, including a small Mary Oliver poetry volume, a card game, and, among other things, 2 copies of Cold Snap, written by one of BV’s own talented young writers, Cody Schneider (more to come on this witty, delightful Viking Cat Mystery soon). There’s a lot to worry about in our world right now, but I truly believe future generations aren’t one of them. We’re in good hands. #onceuponatrapezebookstore #indiebookstore #thekidsarealright #codyscheider
I can pretty much point to the day I quit reading I can pretty much point to the day I quit reading psychological thrillers. I was a freshman in college, away from home for the first time, and had just finished Stephen King’s The Shining. My roommate had gone home for the weekend, so I was alone and thoroughly freaked out. Up until then, I read everything Stephen King wrote as soon as it came out. The Stand is still one of my all time favorite novels! Lately, however, I’ve been slowly sticking my toes back into the thriller genre pool, most recently, Lisa Jewell’s, The Night She Disappeared. I picked this one up based on a customer’s recommendation/special order. I get the best book picks from customers, this one included! Jewell’s story is set in a small English village bordering a forest aptly named Dark Place. Tallulah, just out if secondary school, has recently become a new mother. She continues to live at home with her own single mom, Kim, who offers to babysit and encourages her daughter to take a rare night out with the baby’s father. The two young parents disappear into thin air after ending up at a pool party on the estate of one of Tallulah’s wealthy college classmates. Almost a year later, an obscure detective writer named Sophie moves into a cottage near Dark Place with her boyfriend, who has just become the new Head Teacher at a nearby, posh prep school. Sophie stumbles onto a cardboard sign nailed to a gate reading, “Dig Here”. The discovery she makes creates a real life detective puzzle she becomes determined to solve. Although vaguely aware of where the story was heading as I read, there were definitely twists and turns I didn’t expect and was caught off guard at the very end - a sign of a truly good thriller! This is a good book to spend a long weekend with and definitely a great spring break pick! #onceuponatrapezebookstore #indiebookstores #thenightshedisappeared #lisajewell #thrillerbooks #shoplocal #shopsmall #shopbvfirst
